History
IABC Philippines has the distinction of being the first chapter of IABC outside of the United States. The founders came from the now defunct Philippine Council of Industrial Communicators, which had been a long-time affiliate of the International Association of Industrial Editors and the Canadian Association of Industrial Editors, which later merged to form IABC.
The Filipinos began lobbying to form the Philippine chapter in the yearly IABC world conference from 1978 until 1982, the year they presented their formal bid. These efforts prompted visits to Manila by IABC Executive Director John Bailey, Julie Mower and Anne Forest.
In 1983, IABC International Vice President Normal Leaper endorsed the formation of the Manila chapter to the Executive Board. In the same year, the Filipino group formed the chapter by filing its articles of incorporation with the Securities and Exchanged Commission. The founding members were: Ben Milano (the first President), Tom Balagot, Boo Chanco, Kiko de Leon, Ed Aņo, Cata de Jesus, Wong Po Wah, Lito Buņag, Sonny Coloma, and Lego Gueco.
On September 23, 1983, the IABC Executive Board approved the formation of the Philippine chapter. Mr. Leaper and his wife, Rae, who was past IABC Chair, came to Manila later that year to present the IABC certificate of affiliation and a copy of the Executive Board resolution.
